I finally came to this realization: A lot of profile photos on Plenty Of Fish are of the same variety as the typical MySpace profile photo. That, to me, means lower quality matches for the ’serious’ dater. I rarely log in anymore. When comparing Plenty of Fish against most paid dating sites, there is definitely a quality difference. Does it work for some? For sure – that can’t be denied. However, if you’re serious about finding your match, don’t ignore the paid dating sites – you’ll find relief from the MySpace photos – and get better quality matches along with that.

First Date from Match.com: Huh?

The other week I had what I thought was a great first date. We ‘met’ on Match.com and decided it was time to meet up in person. The location was Beer Bistro on King East, right near Yonge Street. The weather was perfect patio weather and the microbrews were going down well that night. The conversation flowed with zero awkward pauses and smiles and laughing were had by all… errr, two. I walk her to the GO Train (yeah, she’s a 905-er) and after a big hug promised to shoot an email off to her. Since we only ever communicated via Match.com that’s how I sent my message. I was interested in meeting up again. The response, however, was dead silence. Zero. Nada, Zilch. Especially after a great night out I would expect at least a courteous reply to the effect she wasn’t interested. Even if she had a shitty time (which didn’t appear to be the case), a simple note would suffice. Anyway, it’s not a huge deal but possibly we need a chance in dating etiquette?

Review All Your Matches for Free (Minus Photos) @ eHarmony

eHarmony, for a long time now, promotes their service with ‘Review all your matches for free‘. This means you can create your profile (filling out a zillion personality questions that takes at least a half hour) and then you can right away see who they matched you with — All before having to pay them a dime. Wow, what a great deal, right? Hold up. Reviewing matches means seeing the profiles, but those profiles won’t show you the photos until you do offer up your credit card.

Also, some argue that by promoting that new members can ‘review all your matches for free’ it waters down the database of matches for paying members. Why? Because those that have no intention of ever paying may fill out the questionnaire just to see what matches they get. However, if they never pay, that’s a ‘wasted’ match for paying members.

You’re meeting up with someone after work for a date. She works in Toronto’s Financial District at King and Bay. Where to go nearby? If you want good food, a crazy beer list and a place that’s somewhat ‘nice’ but definitely not stuffy, Beer Bistro at King & Yonge should do the trick. They have a patio, too. The servers are super knowledgeable about the beer, and the apps are delicious. I’d recommend the patio if you can swing it, as it’s better for conversation than inside – especially when busy. The patio doesn’t get much (if any sun) so it the heat likely won’t be an issue. Give it a try and comment below on your experience!

Upcoming – View a list of Toronto events and activities. This site doesn’t distinguish between groups you can just join in on versus event listings, but you can likely sort through it to find something that interests you. Worst case, you’ll be somewhere where others are hanging out enjoying something you also enjoy!

Craigslist – Yep, you can meet people via Craigslist, and I’m not talking about the singles classifieds (although you could try that, too, if you want!). The ‘Activity Partners‘ section is likely the best option. Any interest is there: from sports partners to clubbing friends, to poker buddies…

Volunteer Toronto – Volunteering is a great way to meet new people. You also will meet people who share the same causes as you do.

Kijiji – Similar to Craigslist, it’s a free classifieds site. The ‘Community’ section is what you likely want to check out. Notable subcategories include ‘Activities, Groups’, ‘Friendship, Networking’ and ‘Volunteers’. It’s a bit heavy on sports partners and leagues and such, but there are other types of posts as well. A keyword search is likely the way to go to sort past the crap. Kijiji is very heavy on the ads, so it’s not the best user experience, but give it a try if you’re fine with that.

iChurch.com Scam: iChurch Responds but Doesn’t Stop Scamming

iChurch.com, the “Christian” dating site has been scamming members for a while now with their ‘validation’ fee that then rolls over into an expensive membership fee. You only know this by reading the fine print. Their normal response to customers hasn’t been great.

Last week iChurch.com did indeed respond to the many comments on this site by commenting as follows:

iChurch would like to apologize to all of our members that feel like they were misinformed about their membership or did not have a good experience during their membership at iChurch.com. Our company policy is to try to resolve all complaints that our members have about our service and I regret that our customer service has fallen short of your needs. We have added additional customer service representatives to better service our members and expanded our refund policy so that hopefully no member that is deserving of a refund or misinformed about the cost of the membership when signing up will ever feel the need to go anywhere else to complain other than our website, support email staff or phone lines.

Toronto Date Bar: Bar Volo on Yonge

Bar Volo on Yonge Street, just north of Wellesley is a nice little spot to take a date. It’s likely best if your date is a beer drinker, however, as really that’s what Volo is all about. There are a zillion (give or take) beers to be had at Volo. A large draft list (see the board!) and a large menu full of bottled beers from around the world. Examining the unique beer labels is one conversation topic for you (you only need 19 more, now!). I hear the food there is good as well. Want to know what to expect before you make this your date bar suggestion? Check out their Flickr page for photos of the the bar – and the food! Oh, there’s a small patio on the side as well, if that’s your thing. Both drinking? The subway is a short block or two away, so no driving is required. Bar Volo may be busy, as it’s not a huge place, so keep that in mind. A decent backup is the Brownstone Bistro just north of Volo, on Yonge Street. The beer list won’t be anywhere close, but I can vouch for the food, and the service (can’t go wrong!). Happy dating, Toronto!

Toronto Date Bar: Sin & Redemption on McCaul

Sin & Redemption on McCaul (just north of Dundas) in downtown Toronto is a nice spot to meet up for drinks and eats, however consider this before you make this your date bar place: It’s really noisy. I’m not sure what it is, but if the place is full, it’s super loud with conversation. Thus, unless you get the coveted open window seat (in the summer!) you may have problem trying to hear your date! The beer list, however, is quite good. Service is good and I hear the food is decent (I can’t vouch for that, however, having never eaten there). If you end up going to Sin & Redemption and find it too loud you can always skip next door to the Village Idiot Pub right on the corner of McCaul and Dundas. If that fails, try Baldwin Street tucked in behind. Oh, this area is all super easy to get to by public transit, too (something to think about when consuming alcohol, of course!). It’s a short walk from St. Patrick subway station, and right along the Dundas street car line. Happy dating, Toronto!
