Now, you’ll have to be a dating site where your members photos are found via a search engine anyway (mostly free dating sites – a la POF) as to not tick off members for the lack of privacy on your site (i.e. do your members want their photos all over the web, or expect them to stay just on your site?

Anyway, with profile photos being `pinned`to a Pinterest board, that members followers may see the photos… and may go to your dating site and create a profile to hopefully track down those they saw on the board…

Would you date a guy who doesn't have a car?

Everyone knows the ‘traditional’ date experience from high school. Guy pulls up to pick up his date — pulls up in a car. Yes, a car. No car? Crappy car? That may be bad news for you on your date.

Forward yourself years later, when high school is long gone. You could argue that the a guy having a car still matters – but I guess the car should be a ‘nice’ one by now.

Say, however, you live in a place like downtown Toronto, where many ‘downtowners’ don’t have a car. It simply doesn’t make sense to own a car a lot of the time as you can simply walk to do what you want to do — or jump on the streetcar or subway.

I live in downtown Toronto and am selling my car. The only reason I ever bought one was for a job in the 905 (where transit is pretty sketch at best – in most places). I told my co-worker I was selling my car. First reaction was something like, “You need a car for the ladies.” i.e. Girls want a guy with a car. How else will you pick them up to go out? The car adorned with the ‘ZipCar’ logo may not be all that slick, I guess.

I tried to explain how for those of us who live downtown this isn’t really a big deal. We get around via our feet and transit. We live near things like great restaurants and bars and cultural events.

That all said, would a woman who lives downtown have any hesitation dating a guy who doesn’t have a car? Please provide your perspective in the comments below. Thanks!

HowAboutWe allows people to be creative and think up unique things to do on a first date. With that in mind, below is how *not* to use HowAboutWe:

In what is the first I’ve seen, Groupon has an online dating site offer. It was only a matter of time. Innovate dating company HowAboutWe.com is the service who is offering the deal. Really, it’s pretty much a no brainer for online dating sites. The only added cost involved in offering such a discount is *possibly* an increase in customer service staffing. It’s not like a restaurant offering a deal and thus has to purchase more ingredients or have more people cooking, etc, to fulfill a group buying offer (usually losing short term for hopes of repeat business). For an online dating site, the servers and bandwidth are already being paid for — there’s no increase there likely. Also, of note, is that HowAboutWe.com emailed their customers directly as well – in addition (I assume) to Groupon sending it out.

Remember the iChurch scam? This Christian dating site decided to charge people *only* $1.95 as a ‘validation’ fee – except a few days later, as per the fine print, they would then ding you around $150 for a nice big membership… all under the ‘Christian’ banner and after making such a huge deal about how they want their members to act in a Christian manner. It was quite a piece of work. Despite many complaints and even a formal reply – but no change in the way the conduct business – they may now have realized that scamming members may not be the best way to build a business. You see, businesses usually work when they have repeat customers. Once you use the small print to increase a charge from $1.95 to $150 then you may not get that return business. Not sure if the iChurch lawsuit will still be going ahead but it seems iChurch.com have removed the ‘scam’. No more validation fee – just a straight up auto-renewed membership fee (as per most online dating sites):

Hi,

My name is Adam and I work in customer service for iChurch. Due to negative customer feedback from this particular billing plan, we terminated this billing plan several months ago and are offering full refunds for anyone who signed up under the plan and is unsatisfied. If you would like a refund or have any other issue or question, feel free to contact me at support@ichurch.com or 1-877-295-8966 and I’ll be happy to help you!

I’d like to apologize for any inconvenience / frustration that this particular billing plan has caused. We are looking forward to continuing to improve iChurch.com to make it a better and better tool for the faithful to find love and lifelong happiness.

Best,

Adam
Customer Support
iChurch.com

The ‘apology’ is, of course, total bullshit as they’ve been continuing with the practice for ages and giving people the total run around once they requested refunds. Either way, it seems the practice has been stopped. Anyone have experiences with the ‘new’ iChurch.com? Please comment below. Oh, and if you’re some how thinking about giving iChurch.com some of your hard earned money now that they’ve ‘reformed’ — I’d say please don’t. These crooks don’t deserve your money.
