PlentyOfFish is looking for more revenue streams. In addition to becoming a ‘serious member’ (pay to get that badge on your dating profile), you can also pay now to see if/when a message you send has been read (or deleted). Watch for more paid add-ons from the free dating sites, I’d say.

I was responding to an email an Match.com today and along side the input box they have the following tip:

“For every ! or , the email response rates drop by 10 percent—no kidding! And a double exclamation (!!) usually precipitates a 25 percent decline in response, so curb the urge to add that wink.”

Interesting… although not all that surprising. It appears Match.com has crunched the numbers. The double exclamation point I can totally see.

I joined Match.com a few days ago. I received my first scammer email today. Apparently my profile made her heart skip… umm, yeah. Enjoy:

Oooooooooh, so you can communicate all you want, but not actually see photos of anyone. Ummm, this is perfect for those who really don’t care about looks, which is…. how many people? I suppose the real cheapies will just share email addresses and send photos that way, but…

If you haven’t seen a typical dating scam email here’s one that I received today:

Subject: HELP TO CLAIM(14.2MILLIONS USD

DEAR FRIEND,

I AM THE HEAD OF INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT WITH OCEANIC BANK INTERNATIONAL PLC. THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF OCEANIC BANK INTERNATIONAL PLC, MANDATED ME TO LOOK FOR ANY KNOWN RELATION OF MR RICHARD PETERSON.

Most dating sites likely will have caught this before you get a chance to read it (or so I’m hoping) as it’s pretty blatant. I would say most dating scams today occur by engaging you in conversation before asking for funds or otherwise.

Ahhh, the online dating scammers. They usually write in poor english and want you to write to them at a special email address (i.e. no longer communicate on the online dating site itself). Ultimately, they’re looking for money. Money that will likely make it’s way to Nigeria or some other African locale. Do people fall for this scam. Absolutely. Are these ‘scammers’ a huge problem for online dating sites. For sure. If you join a dating site and all the mail you get is from scammers you’re experience isn’t a positive one. Below is a sample conversation from OkCupid. Yes, I played along to see how long the conversation would continue for.

No real surprise here, but turns out women get more responses to email they send out on online dating sites than men do.

‘… it appears that response rates to heterosexual males are extremely low. The baseline rate of reply to messages from men is only 22% and for women it’s over 40%. Essentially, messages sent by men are only half as likely to get replies than messages from women’

In addition, overall, ‘only 32% of dating site messages receive a response‘.
