eHarmony, for a long time now, promotes their service with ‘Review all your matches for free‘. This means you can create your profile (filling out a zillion personality questions that takes at least a half hour) and then you can right away see who they matched you with — All before having to pay them a dime. Wow, what a great deal, right? Hold up. Reviewing matches means seeing the profiles, but those profiles won’t show you the photos until you do offer up your credit card.

Also, some argue that by promoting that new members can ‘review all your matches for free’ it waters down the database of matches for paying members. Why? Because those that have no intention of ever paying may fill out the questionnaire just to see what matches they get. However, if they never pay, that’s a ‘wasted’ match for paying members.

That’s right, starting today on eHarmony Canada you can communicate with your matches for free!

“It’s our Biggest Free Communication Event! From Friday, May 21st through Sunday, May 30th you can communicate with all of your matches through our guided communication system for free! Simply sign in and join the thousands of eHarmony members already experiencing the excitement of getting to know their matches.”

Great, right? Hold up… What’s that fine print:

“Does not include Photos, FastTrack or Secure Call communication. Only includes Guided Communication.”

Oooooooooh, so you can communicate all you want, but not actually see photos of anyone. Ummm, this is perfect for those who really don’t care about looks, which is…. how many people? I suppose the real cheapies will just share email addresses and send photos that way, but…

If you were taken by your date to a party where you knew no one, how would you respond?

This question, by far from my experience, is the most chosen among women to ask men during one of the ‘Guided Communication’ steps of eHarmony:

eHarmony Question: ‘If you were taken by your date to a party where you knew no one, how would you respond?’

eHarmony Possible Answers:
- stay close to my date, letting him/her introduce me
- find a spot at the back bar and relax alone, letting him/her work the room
- strike out on my own, introducing myself and making friends
- I would ask my partner if I could skip this particular event
- (your own answer)

So, from that I would assume that this aspect is very important for most women. My guess is they’re hoping for response ‘C’ which is that their man would have no problem introducing himself to others at a party instead of clinging to his date. Your thoughts on this eHarmony question?

Seems like a ‘no brainer’ but, as you can see, some dating sites don’t partake.

eHarmony Earning Millions from Webloyalty Scam

The list of companies who were ‘affiliates’ for the Webloyalty scam have been released. Any online dating sites? Turns out, yes. eHarmony made millions of dollars, apparently, by sending people’s credit card information to Webloyalty upon checkout of buying an eHarmony subscription. Sure, there was fine print, if you read it, that would tell you what was happening, but shady none the less.

eHarmony Pictures Loading Slowly – As Usual

I jumped back on eHarmony.com (ok, eHarmony.ca for us here in Toronto and the rest of the ‘great white north’). They kept sending discounted offers over and over (and over) again, and I jumped on one on the more recent ones. Anyway, I noticed that the eHarmony site still is horribly slow when rendering photos. Seeing how eHarmony makes a ton of cash, why do they skimp on their site? Can they really not handle the traffic or figure out how to have pictures render faster? Ok, my rant is over. I noticed, also, that they no longer email you matches (unless mine are being blocked for some reason). It used to be you would receive an email ‘___, You’ve been matched with _____‘ or something to that effect. I have to log in to see what’s new now. I’m finding a lot more matches, however, this time around. I’m wondering if all the recent promotion on Canadian TV is getting more people signed up, thus providing more matches. Let’s hope so.

eHarmony Doesn’t Know How PayPal Works

… although they may say that ‘The customer lacks the fundamental knowledge of how PayPal works…‘ The Consumerist has the scoop on a customer who tried to pay eHarmony via PayPal but then was billed twice, despite talking with a customer service rep before the double billing. After the double-billing, they couldn’t (wouldn’t?) resolve it easily. In fact, the frustrated customer just hung up the phone and filed for a chargeback. Be wary of paying eHarmony by PayPal, folks.

eHarmony Toronto Matches: Few and Poor Quality

I paid eHarmony again back on December 1st, to give it a try again. The first time I was active on the site it was sketchy at best. Over maybe 4 or 5 months of subscribing I had actually met 3 women in person. One girl was pretty cute, and we went on a few more dates – the other two not so much. I found myself closing probably about 95% of matches that eHarmony suggested. Now that I’ve tried it again, since December, I’ve probably received no more than 6-8 matches the entire time (in about a month and a half), of which I closed all of them for one reason or another. At least 2-3 of those either had no photo or kept their photo hidden (automatic close for me). All this after I even loosened up my match criteria as well. Needless to say, I’ve clicked the link that ensures I won’t be automatically billed at the end of this membership term. Time to get back to ’standard’ dating sites where you can actively search and view matches on your own instead of relying on the ‘magic’ eHarmony formula.

Since late November, it appears, eHarmony has been on Twitter. This is the first of the major dating sites I’ve seen using Twitter to help solve problems people are tweeting about (i.e. bitching about eHarmony). It appears that the most common solution to solving problems, however, is to provide the toll free number. Not exactly the best, but in fairness to them for those instances that may have been the only way to deal with it (as you can only direct message someone who follows you). ‘eHarmony Jack’ also provides discount promo codes, encourages new members, and links to eHarmony articles.
