I’m voting lame.

Facebook dating ads are notoriously of poor quality and granted something likely had to be done to rein them in. You can blame affiliates for most of it, I’d say. They don’t care about damaging the brand of the service they’re plugging — they just want their quick buck for referring traffic to dating sites. They have no long term interest in it, so they create ads that just get the clicks (and hopefully the sign ups) so they can get paid. Also, since Facebook’s ad system is different than most (you create your own text copy and upload an image) it’s not as easy for dating affiliate managers to keep control — as the affiliate is creating everything on Facebook’s ad system — i.e. it’s not just a copy/paste of code that then produces the banner and appropriate landing URLs.

So, what has Facebook done in part of the clamp down? You can’t make it known in the landing page AND ad copy that you know anything identifiable about the group you’re targeting. For example, if you can’t mention ‘Toronto’ in the ad if you’re only targeting those in Toronto… Odd, yes. Ditto for certain ages, and such. Even if your site only caters to a certain niche group, you still can’t mention that in your ad or landing page – if it matches the targeting parameters you chose on the Facebook ad system.

Overkill? Definitely. Will this shoo away niche-advertisers? Likely. I think they need to revisit this policy. Yes, something had to be done, but they went too far.

Online dating site ads on Facebook are the most disliked among Facebook users.

According to a survey conducted about Facebook users and their enjoyment (or lack there of) of ads shown on Facebook, online dating ads ranked the least liked.

For ‘What advertised product do you like least?’, Dating Sites were in the lead with 46%, far outpacing Education Programs Or Job Sites as the second least liked.

My take: Affiliates have gone crazy with Facebook. Facebook ads let you supply an image with your ad, along with text. This setup is not typical for advertisers, so dating site affiliate programs do not have drop-in code for affiliates to use for Facebook (the format doesn’t allow for this). Thus, you have affiliates using their own creative and their own text. This is where things get out of hand. You’ll have smutty photos plugging all types of dating sites – including niches for which it makes no sense. Affiliates don’t care, they just want to make money. The smuttier the image, the higher the click-through rate (likely). Thing is, they are destroying online dating brands in the mean time. How many online dating brands disallow affiliates to use Facebook? There should be more, because what is going on is out of control and destroying brands.

The title tag and URLs are SEO optimized as they take the profile name you provide. Thus, using an SEO-friendly Friendster account name ranks half decently well for some dating search terms. Just the latest in the dating affiliate spam battle.

As soon as I began writing this post I was thinking maybe it’s the work of an affilate. Click on the link and the URL includes AFFID=30655-G-38&sid=7a3844e94cdb9493 so this could be the work of an affiliate, and not Mate1.com itself. Of course, knowing the typical content of a Mate1.com ad, I’m sure they would be all over this keyword themselves, if they had thought of it.
